How we compared
Pocket-sized here means a screen under 5 inches, in a body you can carry in a jeans or jacket pocket. We compared each reader's published specifications (screen, sharpness, light, input, charging, size, weight, battery, water resistance, software and price) using makers' pages and independent reviews, all checked on 12 October 2026.
We haven't tested the other makers' devices ourselves, so we don't rank them by reading experience. Instead we say which is strongest on paper for each need, and where reviewers found problems. IKAWE makes Moov; weigh that pick accordingly.

Xteink X3: smallest and lightest
The Xteink X3 is the smallest reader you can buy today: 58 g and 97.6 × 63.7 mm, with a sharp 3.7-inch, 259 PPI screen, side buttons, tilt-to-turn and NFC. Six Colors liked its size and found the battery lasted weeks.
The catches: no light, no touchscreen, a pogo-pin charging cable instead of USB-C, a weak magnet, and a small page that means frequent page turns. Most owners replace its stock firmware with CrossPoint.
Boox Picco: smallest with a light
The Boox Picco weighs about the same as the X3 and adds what the X3 lacks: a warm/cool front light, a touchscreen and USB-C, on a 3.97-inch, 235 PPI screen, with a 920 mAh battery and microSD support. It's on preorder at $99.99–109.99.
It runs Boox's own closed, non-Android software, with books added through Boox's app or website or over USB, and reports differ on whether it has a magnetic back.
IKAWE Moov: largest screen, sharpest text
IKAWE Moov has the largest screen in this group, 4.5 inches, in a 110 × 66 × 6 mm, 75 g body that's smaller than the X4 Pro's. Both models have a warm/cool front light, a touchscreen, left and right page-turn buttons, a 1,100 mAh battery, USB-C and CrossPoint.
Moov Lite ($99) has a 219 PPI screen. Moov Pro ($129) is the sharpest pocket reader at 300 PPI, the only one in this group with a water-resistance rating (IPX8), and adds enhanced PDF reflow. This is our reader, so weigh this pick accordingly.
Xteink X4 Pro: the most reviewed front-lit reader
The X4 Pro combines a 4.3-inch touchscreen, side page-turn buttons, a warm/cool front light and a 1,100 mAh battery in a 72 g body, for $99 on sale. Stark Insider gave it 5/5, and TechCrunch found it viable as a main reader.
Reviewers' complaints: the magnetic pogo-pin charger with an easy-to-lose adapter, 219 PPI sharpness, a lowest light setting that's still bright for some, and stock software that most owners replace with CrossPoint. It sells out often.
Xteink X4 Classic: best budget pick
The X4 Classic, also sold as the X4 V2, replaced the original X4 and costs $79 on sale. It's the thinnest reader here at 4.9 mm and about 68 g, with page-turn buttons on both sides, four keys below the screen and tilt-to-turn.
It has no light or touchscreen, and it switched from the original X4's USB-C to pogo-pin charging, which owners criticised. CrossPoint officially supports it from version 1.6.5.
Seeed reTerminal Sticky: cheapest, for tinkerers
The reTerminal Sticky costs $49.90 and has a 3.97-inch touchscreen, USB-C, a magnet and support for several open-source firmwares, including CrossPoint. It has no front light, it's thicker at 7.3 mm, and it's sold as a flashable e-paper gadget rather than a finished e-reader, so expect some setup.
Xteink X4 and Xteink S4
The original Xteink X4 ($69) was discontinued in August 2026; it's now only found as leftover or used stock. It had USB-C but no light or touchscreen.
The Xteink S4 is a different kind of device: an Android 11 reader with a 4.3-inch front-lit touchscreen, USB-C and 32 GB of storage, which can run the Kindle and Kobo apps. It's sold only in China so far, and most of its specs come from press reports.
Phone-sized alternatives
If you can carry something the size of a phone, 6-inch readers give you a bigger page and access to stores and libraries, at more than twice the weight of a pocket reader.
| Reader | Screen | Water | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PocketBook Q | 5.84-inch | IPX4 | €199 | 130 g; front light; expected late 2026 |
| Kindle (2026) | 6-inch, 300 PPI | No rating found | $149.99 | Kindle store; the Paperwhite and Colorsoft are the waterproof Kindles |
| Kobo Clara BW | 6-inch, 300 PPI | IPX8 | $159.99 | 174 g; warm light; Kobo store and Libby built in |
| Boox Palma 2 | 6.13-inch, 300 PPI | Water-repellent, not rated | $249.99 | 170 g; Android 13, runs any reading app. The Palma 3 (Android 16, about $340) has also launched |
What to check before you buy
- Light: only some pocket readers have a built-in front light. Without one you'll need a lamp. See the smallest e-readers with a front light.
- Charging: pogo-pin adapters (X3, X4 Classic, X4 Pro) are the most common complaint; USB-C models (Moov, Picco, Sticky) avoid them.
- Books: most pocket readers read DRM-free EPUB and TXT only, so Kindle purchases and Libby loans won't open. Android readers can run store apps.
- Software: Xteink readers ship with Xteink's firmware, and most owners install the open-source CrossPoint. Xteink says units from its store and Amazon aren't locked, but some sold elsewhere have been.
- Sharpness: 219 PPI is fine for normal font sizes; 259–300 PPI is noticeably smoother with small text.
- Phone fit: magnetic backs suit MagSafe-style cases, but a 4- to 4.5-inch reader overhangs smaller phones.
- Water: Moov Pro (IPX8) is the only pocket reader here with a water rating. See is the Xteink waterproof?
Frequently asked questions
What is the smallest e-reader in 2026?
The Xteink X3 (97.6 × 63.7 × 5.1 mm, 58 g) and the Boox Picco (105.5 × 62 × 5.5 mm, about 58 g) are the smallest current e-readers we found.
Which pocket e-readers have a front light?
IKAWE Moov, the Xteink X4 Pro, the Boox Picco and the China-only Xteink S4. The X3, X4, X4 Classic and reTerminal Sticky don't.
Which pocket e-reader has the sharpest screen?
IKAWE Moov Pro, at 300 PPI on a 4.5-inch screen. The Xteink X3 is next at 259 PPI.
Is any pocket e-reader waterproof?
IKAWE Moov Pro is rated IPX8. None of the Xteink readers, the Boox Picco or the reTerminal Sticky has a water-resistance rating.
Can a pocket e-reader read Kindle books?
Usually not. Kindle books are DRM-protected, and readers such as Xteink's and Moov read DRM-free files. Android models such as the Xteink S4 or Boox Palma can run the Kindle app.
What's the cheapest pocket e-reader?
The Seeed reTerminal Sticky ($49.90), aimed at tinkerers. Among finished e-readers, the Xteink X3 ($69 on sale) and X4 Classic ($79 on sale) are the cheapest.
Are mini e-readers worth it?
If you want a book with you all the time, yes: they're light enough to carry everywhere. If you read for hours at a time or rely on library loans, a 6-inch Kindle or Kobo is more comfortable and better connected.
Pocket e-reader or phone-sized e-reader?
A pocket reader (58–77 g) disappears in a pocket or on the back of your phone. A 6-inch reader (about 170 g) shows more text and connects to stores and libraries.
