The smallest e-readers with a front light in 2026

Which pocket and mini e-readers have a built-in light? The Boox Picco, Xteink X4 Pro and IKAWE Moov do; the X3, X4 and X4 Classic don't. Front light vs backlight.

By IKAWE · Published · 8 min read

IKAWE makes Moov, which appears in this guide; its specifications are IKAWE's own. We haven't tested the other readers hands-on: their specifications come from makers' pages and independent reviews, checked on 12 October 2026 and listed under Sources.

Key takeaways

  • Four e-readers under 5 inches have a built-in warm/cool front light: the Boox Picco, Xteink X4 Pro, IKAWE Moov and the China-only Android Xteink S4.
  • The Xteink X3, X4 and X4 Classic have no light, and neither does the Seeed reTerminal Sticky.
  • Smallest: the 3.97-inch Boox Picco (about 58 g, on preorder). Largest screen and sharpest: IKAWE Moov's 4.5-inch screen, at 300 PPI on Moov Pro.
  • E-ink readers aren't backlit: a front light spreads light across the screen from its edges, instead of shining straight at you like a phone.

Front light vs backlight: what's the difference?

Phone and tablet screens are backlit: light shines through the display towards your eyes. E-ink screens reflect light like paper, so in daylight they need no light at all, and they stay readable in bright sun where phones wash out.

To read in the dark, e-readers use a front light: a row of small LEDs along one edge of the screen shines into a thin, clear light guide layered over the e-ink, which spreads the light evenly across the page. You see lit paper rather than a glowing screen. Warm/cool front lights add amber LEDs alongside the white ones, so you can blend the tone from cool white to a candle-like amber for evening reading.

So when you search for an e-reader with a backlight, a front light is what you're looking for. Every e-ink reader with a built-in light uses one.

Does the Xteink X4 or X3 have a backlight?

No. The original X4 and the X4 Classic (X4 V2) have no front light, and the X3 doesn't either; Xteink sells a $9.99 clip-on light for it. To read them in the dark you need a lamp or a clip-on light.

The X4 Pro is the Xteink model with a built-in warm/cool front light, and the Android-based S4 has one too, though it's only sold in China so far. More in Moov vs X4 and X4 Classic and Moov vs X3.

Boox Picco: the smallest with a light

The Boox Picco puts a warm/cool front light on a 3.97-inch, 235 PPI touchscreen, in a 105.5 × 62 × 5.5 mm body of about 58 g. It charges over USB-C, has a 920 mAh battery and takes a microSD card. It's on preorder at $99.99–109.99.

It runs Boox's own closed, non-Android software, with books added through Boox's app or website or over USB, and its smaller screen fits less text on each page than 4.3- and 4.5-inch readers.

Xteink X4 Pro: the most reviewed front-lit pocket reader

The X4 Pro packs a warm/cool front light, a touchscreen and side page-turn buttons into a 72 g body with a 4.3-inch, 219 PPI screen, for $99 on sale. Stark Insider gave it 5/5, and TechCrunch found it viable as a main reader.

Its light has drawn the most criticism: TechCrunch found the lowest setting still too bright for a dark bedroom, and some owners report the light switching off between page turns on Xteink's stock firmware. It charges through a magnetic pogo-pin cable. See Moov vs X4 Pro.

IKAWE Moov: the largest front-lit screen in a pocket size

Moov Lite and Moov Pro both have a warm/cool front light with adjustable brightness and warmth, on a 4.5-inch touchscreen with left and right page-turn buttons. The body measures 110 × 66 × 6 mm and weighs 75 g, and both models charge over USB-C, with a 1,100 mAh battery and CrossPoint out of the box.

Moov Lite ($99) has a 219 PPI screen. Moov Pro ($129) is sharper at 300 PPI, adds enhanced PDF reflow and is rated IPX8, so you can read by the pool or in the bath. This is our reader, so weigh this pick accordingly.

Xteink S4: front-lit and Android, China only

The Xteink S4 has a 4.3-inch warm/cool front-lit touchscreen, USB-C and Android 11, so it can run the Kindle and Kobo apps. It's heavier at a reported 89–95 g and, as of October 2026, only sold in China; most of its specifications come from press reports rather than an official English page.

Pros and cons of the front-lit pocket readers

Boox Picco

Pros

  • Lightest front-lit reader (about 58 g)
  • USB-C and microSD
  • Touchscreen

Cons

  • Smallest screen of the four (3.97-inch)
  • Preorder only
  • Boox's closed software

Xteink X4 Pro

Pros

  • Widely reviewed and on sale
  • Touch plus side buttons
  • Runs CrossPoint

Cons

  • Pogo-pin charging with an adapter
  • Lowest light setting still bright for some
  • 219 PPI
  • Often sold out

IKAWE Moov

Pros

  • Largest screen (4.5-inch)
  • 300 PPI on Moov Pro
  • USB-C; IPX8 on Moov Pro
  • CrossPoint out of the box

Cons

  • 17 g heavier than the Picco
  • Moov Pro costs $20–30 more than the X4 Pro
  • No DRM-protected Kindle or Libby books

No light? Your options

  • A clip-on book light: Xteink sells a $9.99 clip-on light for the X3; any small clip-on reading light works on other unlit readers.
  • Read in daylight or by a lamp: e-ink without a light looks like paper, and it's at its best in bright light.
  • Choose a front-lit model: if you read in bed or on dark commutes, a built-in light is worth the extra $20–30 over an unlit model.

What to look for in a front light

  • Warm/cool tone: lets you shift to amber light in the evening. All four front-lit pocket readers here have it.
  • Low minimum brightness: some readers are still too bright at their lowest setting for a dark bedroom. Check reviews for this.
  • Even lighting: look for reviews mentioning bright spots or shadows near the LEDs at the screen's edge.
  • Quick controls: a light you can adjust without digging through menus is easier to live with.
  • Battery: a front light uses power, so expect shorter battery life with it on.

Which should you choose?

Frequently asked questions

What is the smallest e-reader with a light?

The 3.97-inch Boox Picco (about 58 g) is the smallest front-lit e-reader we found, though it's on preorder. The 4.3-inch Xteink X4 Pro (72 g) and 4.5-inch IKAWE Moov (75 g) are the next smallest.

Does the Xteink X3 have a backlight?

No. The X3 has no front light; Xteink sells a clip-on light separately.

Does the Xteink X4 have a backlight?

No. Neither the original X4 nor the X4 Classic has a front light. The X4 Pro does.

Does the Xteink X4 Pro have a backlight?

Yes, a front light with warm and cool tones and adjustable brightness.

Does IKAWE Moov have a light?

Yes. Moov Lite and Moov Pro both have a warm/cool front light with adjustable brightness and warmth.

Is a front light the same as a backlight?

No. A backlight shines through a screen towards you; a front light lights an e-ink screen from its edges, like a lamp over paper. On e-readers, a front light does the job people expect from a backlight.

Is a front light bad for sleep?

A front light reflects off the page rather than shining at you, and warm settings cut blue light. Turning brightness down and the tone warm in the evening is the usual advice.

Does a front light drain the battery?

Yes, it uses extra power, so battery life is shorter with the light on, especially at high brightness.
