IKAWE Moov Pro panel: resolution, pitch, and 300 PPI

Moov Pro's panel is 688 × 1,144 pixels across 58.25 × 96.86 mm. The 0.08467 mm pitch is 300 PPI. The 4.5-inch size is nominal; the active area is 4.45 inches.

Written by IKAWE, the maker of Moov. The dimensions below are the mechanical specification of the e-ink panel in Moov Pro. The pixel-density figures are calculated from those dimensions.

Key takeaways

  • Moov Pro's e-ink panel is 688 × 1,144 square pixels. Each pixel is 0.08467 mm across.
  • The active area is 58.25 × 96.86 mm. That rectangle measures 4.450 inches on the diagonal, and the pixels across it come out to 300 PPI.
  • 4.5 inches is the nominal screen size. Dividing the same pixels by 4.5 inches gives 296.7 PPI, because 4.5 is a rounded label for a 4.450-inch active area.
  • The pixel pitch gives the same answer on its own: 25.4 ÷ 0.08467 = 299.99 PPI.

The panel measurements

PPI is how many pixels fit along one inch of the active area, the part of the panel that draws the page. These are the mechanical dimensions of the e-ink panel in IKAWE Moov Pro.

The 4.5-inch size is nominal

E-reader screen sizes are rounded names. Moov Pro is a 4.5-inch reader because that is the panel's nominal size. The active area, the rectangle that actually contains the pixels, measures a little under that.

  1. The active area is 58.25 mm wide and 96.86 mm tall.
  2. Its diagonal is √(58.25² + 96.86²) = √12,774.92 = 113.03 mm.
  3. 113.03 ÷ 25.4 = 4.450 inches.

The nominal 4.5-inch label is 0.05 inches longer than the diagonal of the area that draws pixels. Pixel density has to use that measured area, or the pitch of the pixels themselves.

PPI from the pixel pitch

The direct measurement is the pixel pitch: the distance from the centre of one pixel to the centre of the next. The pixels are square, so the pitch is 0.08467 mm horizontally and 0.08467 mm vertically.

One inch is 25.4 mm. The number of those pixels in an inch is 25.4 ÷ 0.08467 = 299.99 PPI, which is 300 PPI to the nearest pixel per inch.

The same pitch rebuilds the active area, so the resolution, the pitch and the active area are one specification stated three ways:

  • 688 × 0.08467 mm = 58.253 mm, given as 58.25 mm.
  • 1,144 × 0.08467 mm = 96.862 mm, given as 96.86 mm.

The same result from the active area

A second route counts the pixels along the diagonal and divides by the active-area diagonal in inches.

  1. Pixel diagonal: √(688² + 1,144²) = √(473,344 + 1,308,736) = √1,782,080 = 1,334.95 pixels.
  2. Active-area diagonal: 113.03 mm ÷ 25.4 = 4.450 inches.
  3. 1,334.95 ÷ 4.450 = 299.99 PPI.

The pitch and the diagonal agree. Both are 300 PPI once rounded to the nearest pixel per inch.

What the 300 PPI figure describes

300 PPI is the density of the e-ink panel. Moov Pro puts a warm/cool front light in front of that reflective panel. The light does not change how many pixels fit in an inch.

Square pixels mean the horizontal and vertical pitch are equal, so a letter is drawn at the same fineness either way. The panel renders 16 grey levels, which is what smooths the edges of type. There are 787,072 pixels in total (688 × 1,144).

These figures are the panel's geometry. For what that density does to small type, italics and a pocket screen held close, see 300 PPI e-readers explained.

Frequently asked questions

Is Moov Pro really 300 PPI?

Yes. 25.4 mm divided by the 0.08467 mm pixel pitch is 299.99, which is 300 PPI. Counting 1,334.95 pixels across the 4.450-inch active-area diagonal gives the same result.

Why does dividing by 4.5 inches give 296.7 PPI?

4.5 inches is the nominal screen size. The active area measures 4.450 inches on the diagonal. 1,334.95 pixels divided by 4.5 is 296.7 PPI. Divided by 4.450 it is 299.99 PPI.

What resolution is Moov Pro?

688 × 1,144 pixels, which is 787,072 pixels. Each pixel is 0.08467 mm across.

How big is the active area?

58.25 mm wide by 96.86 mm tall. The diagonal is 113.03 mm, or 4.450 inches. The reader body around the panel is 110 × 66 × 6 mm.

Are the pixels square?

Yes. The pitch is 0.08467 mm in both directions, and the panel is monochrome with 16 grey levels.
