How to read PDFs on a small e-reader: reflow, conversion and what works on each reader
PDFs are built for A4 paper, not a 4-inch screen. Make them readable on a pocket e-reader: reflow, calibre conversion to EPUB, k2pdfopt, and which readers open PDFs.

Key takeaways
- A PDF has a fixed page designed for paper, so on a 4–4.5-inch screen its text is tiny. The fix is reflow: re-wrapping the text to fit the screen.
- Xteink readers (stock or CrossPoint) and the Boox Picco don't open PDFs. Convert them to EPUB with calibre first.
- IKAWE Moov takes PDFs through the IKAWE app, which processes them for the reader; Moov Pro adds enhanced PDF reflow and text formatting.
- Text PDFs (novels, reports) reflow well. Scans, two-column papers, tables and maths reflow badly; for those, a 6-inch or larger screen is the better tool.

Why PDFs are hard on a small screen
A PDF is a picture of a printed page: every line sits at a fixed position on an A4 or letter-sized sheet. Shrink that page to fit a 4.5-inch screen and 11-point body text ends up around 4 points, too small to read. Zooming in means panning around the page line by line.
EPUB works differently: its text re-wraps (reflows) to fit any screen at whatever font size you choose. So the goal with a PDF on a pocket reader is to get its text into a reflowable form.
Which small readers open PDFs
| Reader | Opens PDFs? | Best approach |
|---|---|---|
| Xteink X3, X4, X4 Classic, X4 Pro (stock) | No | Convert to EPUB with calibre |
| Xteink readers with CrossPoint | No | Convert to EPUB with calibre |
| Boox Picco | No | Convert to EPUB first |
| IKAWE Moov Lite and Pro | Yes, through the IKAWE app | Import the PDF in the app, which processes it for Moov; Moov Pro adds enhanced reflow |
| 6-inch Kindle and Kobo readers | Yes | Fine for simple PDFs; zoom or landscape for small text |
| Boox Palma 2 and 3 (Android) | Yes | Boox's reader app can crop margins and reflow |
Option 1: convert the PDF to EPUB with calibre
The free calibre e-book manager converts PDFs to EPUB. It works well for text-based PDFs such as novels, essays and reports:
- Install calibre and add the PDF (Add books).
- Select it and choose Convert books, with EPUB as the output format.
- Open the result in calibre's viewer and check headers, footers and page numbers, which sometimes end up in the middle of paragraphs.
- Copy the EPUB to your reader; see how to get books onto a pocket e-reader.
If the converted text is jumbled, the PDF is probably a scan (an image of text) or has a complex layout. Try option 2, or read it on a larger screen.
Option 2: re-paginate it with k2pdfopt
k2pdfopt is a free tool that cuts a PDF into its text regions and re-lays them out as a new PDF sized for your screen, removing margins and splitting two-column pages. It handles some layouts calibre can't, and can recognise text in scans.
Its output is still a PDF, so it only helps on readers that open PDFs, such as a Kindle, Kobo or Boox Palma. Results vary, and files can grow large, so it's best for documents you'll read once.
Option 3: let the reader or its app do it
Some readers reflow PDFs for you. IKAWE Moov takes PDFs through the IKAWE app: import the PDF on your phone, select Sync on Moov, and the app processes it for the 4.5-inch screen. Moov Pro adds enhanced PDF reflow and text formatting, and its 300 PPI screen keeps small labels and diagrams sharper. Step by step: add books to Moov.
Android readers such as the Boox Palma run reading apps that can crop margins and reflow text, and Kindle and Kobo readers can zoom or switch to landscape for wide pages.
Which PDFs reflow well, and which don't
| Kind of PDF | Reflows well? | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Novels, essays, reports (text PDFs) | Yes | Convert to EPUB or use your reader's reflow |
| Scanned books | Poorly | Needs text recognition first; k2pdfopt can help |
| Two-column academic papers | Mixed | k2pdfopt splits columns; check equations and figures |
| Tables, charts, maths | No | Read them on a larger screen, or view the original page |
| Comics and illustrated books | No | Use CBZ or images on readers that support them, or a bigger screen |
Tips for reading PDFs on a pocket reader
- Prefer an EPUB edition if one exists: publishers and Project Gutenberg often offer both.
- Choose text PDFs over scans: if you can select and copy text in the PDF on your computer, it will reflow.
- A sharper screen helps when you do look at a whole page: see 300 PPI e-readers explained.
- Keep the original: conversions lose layout, so keep the PDF for figures and tables.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Xteink X4 read PDFs?
No. Neither Xteink's stock firmware nor CrossPoint opens PDFs. Convert them to EPUB with calibre first.
Can the Boox Picco read PDFs?
No. Boox doesn't list PDF among the Picco's formats. Convert PDFs to EPUB first.
Can IKAWE Moov read PDFs?
Yes, through the IKAWE app, which processes PDFs for Moov. Moov Pro adds enhanced PDF reflow and text formatting.
How do I convert a PDF to EPUB?
Add the PDF to the free calibre e-book manager, select Convert books and choose EPUB. It works best on text-based PDFs.
What is PDF reflow?
Re-wrapping a PDF's text so it fits your screen at a readable size, instead of shrinking the whole printed page.
Why is my converted PDF jumbled?
It's probably a scan or has a complex layout, such as columns, tables or maths. Try k2pdfopt, or read it on a larger screen.
