Xteink alternatives: the best pocket e-readers that aren't Xteink (2026)
The best Xteink alternatives for every model: pocket e-readers with USB-C, a sharper screen, water resistance or Android, from IKAWE, Boox, Seeed and PocketBook.
By IKAWE · Published · 7 min read
IKAWE makes Moov, one of the alternatives below; its specifications are IKAWE's own. We haven't tested the other readers hands-on: their specifications come from makers' pages and independent reviews, checked on 19 October 2026 and listed under Sources.
Key takeaways
- Xteink makes good, cheap pocket readers. People look elsewhere mainly for USB-C charging, a sharper screen, water resistance, reliable stock or Android apps.
- Instead of the X3: the Boox Picco, similar in size, adds a light, touch and USB-C.
- Instead of the X4 Classic or X4 Pro: IKAWE Moov adds USB-C and a bigger 4.5-inch screen; Moov Pro adds 300 PPI and IPX8.
- Instead of the Android-based S4 (sold only in China): the Boox Palma 2 or 3, or the PocketBook Q with Libby built in.

Why look beyond Xteink?
Xteink deserves its success. Its readers are small, cheap and well supported by the open-source CrossPoint firmware, and with the X3, X4 Classic and X4 Pro there's a model for most budgets. But a few things push people to look at other brands:
- Pogo-pin charging. All three of Xteink's current international models charge through a magnetic pogo-pin cable or adapter, the most common complaint in reviews. The original X4 had USB-C, but it's discontinued.
- Stock. Xteink readers have sold out repeatedly; the X4 Classic was listed as sold out when we checked.
- Firmware. In April 2026, some newly shipped units couldn't be flashed with custom firmware (The eBook Reader). Xteink now guarantees that units bought directly from xteink.com aren't locked, but some sold through other stores have been.
- Sharpness. The X4 line is 219 PPI; the X3 tops the range at 259 PPI.
- Water. No Xteink reader has a water-resistance rating.
- Apps. The Android-based S4, which can run the Kindle app, is sold only in China, with no plans for an international release.

Xteink models and their alternatives

|---|---|---|---|

| Xteink X3 | Seeed reTerminal Sticky | Touchscreen, USB-C, lower price | No light; thicker; a gadget you set up yourself |
| Xteink X4 Classic ($79–89): 4.3-inch, no light or touch | IKAWE Moov Lite | Front light, touch, USB-C, bigger 4.5-inch screen | Costs $20 more; 7 g heavier; no tilt-to-turn |

Instead of the X3: Boox Picco
The X3 is the smallest Xteink: a 3.7-inch, 259 PPI screen in a 58 g body, with buttons and tilt-to-turn but no light or touchscreen. The Boox Picco is almost as small (105.5 × 62 × 5.5 mm, about 58 g) and fills both gaps with a warm/cool front light and a touchscreen, plus USB-C and a 920 mAh battery against the X3's 650 mAh.
It's less sharp at 235 PPI, costs more ($109.99 from Boox's US warehouse, $99.99 from Hong Kong), and ships around November. Its software is more closed than Xteink's: books go on through Boox's Tiles app or website, and it doesn't open PDFs.
Instead of the X4 Classic or X4 Pro: IKAWE Moov
Moov is closest to the X4 Pro in concept, a front-lit touchscreen with left and right page-turn buttons, but answers the main Xteink complaints: it charges and transfers files over USB-C, its 4.5-inch screen is larger, and it runs CrossPoint out of the box, with no locked firmware to worry about. It measures 110 × 66 × 6 mm and weighs 75 g.
Moov Lite ($99) matches the X4 line's 219 PPI. Moov Pro ($129) has a 300 PPI screen, the first pocket-sized e-reader we know of at that sharpness, plus IPX8 water resistance and enhanced PDF reflow. Both support EPUB, MOBI, TXT and PDF, and take books over USB-C, Wi-Fi or the IKAWE companion app. Compared with the X4 Classic, you give up its thinner 4.9 mm body, tilt-to-turn and $20 of savings. This is our reader, so weigh the pick accordingly; the X4 Pro alternatives guide compares it with every other option.
Instead of the S4: Boox Palma or PocketBook Q
The Xteink S4 is the Xteink people outside China wish they could buy: a 4.3-inch, front-lit Android reader with USB-C that can run the Kindle and Kobo apps. Xteink representatives have said there are no plans for an international release.
The nearest alternatives are bigger. The Boox Palma 2 ($269.99) and Palma 3 ($339.99, coming soon) are 6.13-inch, 300 PPI Android readers that run any reading app, at 170 and 195 g. The PocketBook Q (€199, expected late 2026) isn't Android, but has Libby built in for library loans, a 5.84-inch, 300 PPI screen and IPX4 splash resistance, at 130 g.

Which alternatives run CrossPoint?
Many Xteink owners chose their reader for CrossPoint, the open-source reading firmware. If that matters to you:
- IKAWE Moov runs CrossPoint out of the box.
- Seeed reTerminal Sticky is officially supported, alongside three other open-source firmwares.
- Boox Picco has no CrossPoint build. readme.club reports that its software is based on an early CrossPoint version, but Boox hasn't confirmed this, and it advises against third-party firmware.
- Boox Palma and PocketBook Q run their own systems (Android and PocketBook's Linux-based software).

Frequently asked questions
What are the best Xteink alternatives?
IKAWE Moov (USB-C, 4.5-inch, up to 300 PPI and IPX8), the Boox Picco (smaller, with a light and USB-C), the Seeed reTerminal Sticky (cheapest, for tinkerers) and, for Android or library books, the Boox Palma and PocketBook Q.
Is Boox better than Xteink?
It depends on the model. The Boox Picco adds a front light, touch and USB-C at the X3's size, but its software is more closed: books go on through Boox's app or website, and it doesn't open PDFs. Boox's Palma readers are larger Android devices.
Is there an Xteink alternative with USB-C?
Yes: IKAWE Moov, the Boox Picco and the Seeed reTerminal Sticky all charge over USB-C. Xteink's current international models use pogo pins.
Which Xteink alternatives run CrossPoint?
IKAWE Moov ships with CrossPoint, and the Seeed reTerminal Sticky is officially supported. There's no CrossPoint build for the Boox Picco.
Is there an Xteink alternative that reads Kindle books?
Not at pocket size. Android readers such as the Boox Palma 2 and 3 run the Kindle app, and Xteink's own S4 does too, but it's only sold in China.
Is there a waterproof Xteink alternative?
IKAWE Moov Pro is rated IPX8 at 4.5 inches. No Xteink reader has a water-resistance rating.
Are Xteink readers locked?
Xteink guarantees that units bought directly from xteink.com aren't locked against custom firmware. Some sold through other stores have been.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Xteink?
The Seeed reTerminal Sticky costs $49.90, but it has no front light and is sold as a flashable e-paper gadget. Among finished readers, Xteink's X3 and X4 Classic are already the cheapest.
